The hatching process is monitored closely, nests are marked with the number of eggs, and when they are due to hatch. Volunteers patrol the beaches at night, collect nests after the mother turtles have left, and bring them to a sanctuary to be placed in protected incubation pens, safe from predators and poachers. Volunteer organizations such as La Tortuga Viva exist to specifically protect this part of the sea turtle’s life journey.
At the nesting sites, poachers often prowl the beaches and dig up sea turtle eggs to sell as an aphrodisiac or delicacy and many mother sea turtles are killed in the process. Vehicles on the beach, human trash, and fishing debris such as washed up nets, can harm sea turtles while on their way to their nesting grounds. Sea turtles are extra vulnerable when they are nesting.
